Some New Mexico Teacher Preparation Programs Show Promise in Reading Instruction, Reveals NCTQ Review https://nmeducation.org/some-nm-teacher-preperation-programs-show-promise-in-reading-instruction-reveals-nctq-review/ Wed, 26 Jul 2023 23:00:00 +0000 https://nmeducation.org/?p=5110 A review conducted by the National Council on Teacher Quality (NCTQ) evaluated teacher preparation programs in New Mexico and found some programs to be promising in the area of teaching effective reading instruction. The report assessed six undergraduate and two graduate programs, awarding points based on their effectiveness in teaching the five core components of scientifically based reading instructions. Western New Mexico University received an A+ in for both their undergraduate and graduate programs, , while Eastern New Mexico University earned an A. New Mexico Highlands University earned a B, and New Mexico State University received a B for its undergraduate program. Northern New Mexico College and the University of New Mexico received a D and an F, respectively. The study recommended that programs improve instruction on advanced reading skills and provide more hands-on experiences.
